Art Exhibition “Force of Femininity” Beth Mitchell Underwater Photographer
Beth Mitchell is an Australian fine art photographer specialising in figurative underwater imagery. Born in 1991 and raised in Queensland, Australia, Beth invested a majority of her youth lost in creative expression through the medium of Photography.
Join us to celebrate the opening exhibition of the new collection by Beth Mitchell at our Paddington Gallery from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. Light refreshments will be provided. Exhibition runs until the 3rd of March 2020.
Her images explore and echo classic and contemporary art themes, as well as stories of strong female achievers. She produces seemingly idealistic images of femininity, perfected by polished technique, yet they whisper deeply into contemporary societal dialogue.
Her work takes a journey through the celebration of ethereal femininity, visual depictions of mental health and exploring womanhood in todays society.
In 2019 Beth has been a finalist and category winner in a number of Australian and international art awards including Beautiful Bizarre Photography Art Prize, Brisbane Portrait Prize for her underwater portrait of Amy Sheppard, of international band “Sheppard” and honourable mention in the Australian Photographic Awards.
“I fell in love with the ocean when I was a little girl. As my father would launch me high above an incoming wave, my mother would photograph us from the shore. The still camera was an extension of my mother, the video camera an extension of my father. My youth was involuntarily invested in creative exploration, lost in my medium of photography.
At 17, I felt an indescribable longing to tell stories underwater. My bond with the creation of ethereal settings and tales of whimsy quickly solidified. My stories and artistic expressions grew alongside me, like a lifelong friend.
Upon first glance, these images of idealistic femininity seem flawless, perhaps merely the product of polished techniques, or objectively beautiful elements; a constant striving for
unattainable perfection. Yet they whisper deeply into womanhood‘s navigation through a flawed society, questions of identity, the impacts of mental health and challenging our misguided acceptance of a damaging influencer economy.
Exhibiting the force of femininity is my legacy, celebrated through honesty, vulnerability and comfort in imperfection.”
