A New Gravity by Kerry Holland

A New Gravity by Kerry Holland

“I am building with everything I know, so that I can see it” – Kerry Holland

You only notice the little china duck painted in the lower corner of in one of Kerry Holland’s recent oil paintings when you have stood looking at the work for a while. The little duck was once her grandmother’s.

Kerry’s abstract metaphoric compositions invite reflection. Shifting perspectives suggested the exhibition title A New Gravity and relate very naturally with her asymmetric ceramics creating a dancing unity.

Influenced by the ideas of Australian potter Gwyn Hanssen Pigott and English potter Ewen Henderson, Kerry’s hand-built bowls, humble, raw and imperfect, are beautiful to hold. Their nuanced surfaces fit into the hand. Made slowly and carefully but retaining the freedom of spontaneity and the happy accidents of the firing process, they are earthed but light.

An artist for over 35 years, Kerry enjoys the way an artwork emerges gradually and that discoveries are made from the art itself. A contributor to contemporary Australian religious art her work has a voice that springs from the feminine story and her own spirituality.

There are many layers of meaning and pockets of delight to be discovered in the exhibition: A New Gravity, paintings and ceramics by Kerry Holland, at the Percolator Gallery from Tuesday May 10 – Saturday May 23. Join us for the opening night on Thursday May 12 from 6:30–8:30 pm at Percolator Gallery.
