50/50

50/50

50/50 is a participatory performance class on Lindy Hop. Through a series of conversations and demonstrations, audience members will participate in learning the basic footwork of the dance.

Lindy Hop is a social dance born in 1930s Harlem, New York City. Traditionally performed to a jazzy soundtrack and known for its acrobatic airsteps, Lindy Hop has a focus on the partner being lifted off the ground in time to the music.

Singapore artist Loo Zihan and his collaborators have been learning, dancing and performing the Lindy Hop for more than a decade. 50/50 started with a desire for them to jumpstart a process where they question their identities in relation to this dance and the Lindy Hop community’s definition of authenticity.

Register as an audience member and participate in basic steps while learning the background of Lindy Hop, the performance of gender, race and sexuality in social dance and everyday life. Two classes are held each night and will conclude with an open Dance Party of social dancing to jazz music courtesy of a DJ. No experience in movement or dance is required, so give it a shot!
