Almost 160 years of Queensland Defence Force are to be commemorated on Saturday March 8 with the 100 Mounted Horse Parade. At the start of February 1860, the Colonial Secretary announced in the Moreton Bay Courier that lists were open for the enlistment of one troop of twenty-five Mounted Rifles and two companies of fifty riflemen each. The men were considered volunteers, supplied their own horses and uniforms and undertook training for two hours twice a week. This marks the humble beginnings of what is today known as the 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment and 9 Battalion Royal Queensland Regiment.

On Sunday, 100 horses and their riders will parade through the streets of Brisbane City. Organised by the Queensland Mounted Infantry Historical Troop (QMIHT) the parade returns to Victoria Park, Herston for a formal ceremonial parade this will provide an opportunity for Queenslanders to gather and reflect on its proud military history. The Governor of Queensland the Honourable Paul De Jersey will be accompanied by his wife and will provide a speech at the parade. QMIHT has had an impactful history in drawing large crowds of veterans, families, and tourists to their events. The parade will provide photo and interview opportunities with the mounted infantry participants, Australian Defence Force, Police Units, Government Officials as well as Brisbane locals and tourists.
