Young Men Dead

Say hello to Brisbane’s Young Men Dead

There must be something in the water in Brisbane – the city is continually cultivating a growing league of talented musicians, whose numbers multiply dramatically with each year. The latest group to announce itself to the city’s stage is four-piece, Young Men Dead.

The band is the creation of two of the group’s current members, singer David ‘Beaver’ Thomas and drummer Dean Foran. After releasing a few demos, the boys soon found themselves on the airwaves as a Triple J Unearthed Feature Artist. It was then that the duo acquired the help of their equally talented friends, Pete Tanevski and Adam Scott to form the final four-piece ensemble, Young Men Dead.

The group’s tunes are a dance-worthy combination of jumpy percussion, dreamy vocals and a little synth on the side. Listing their inspirations as acts including Friendly Fires and Hot Chip, it’s not hard to hear the pioneering UK acts’ influence over the group’s sound, particularly in songs like ‘My Sister’.

While stirring up a loyal fan base within Brisbane, Young Men Dead has also generated some interstate and international popularity. The group has played as support for a number of big-name musicians, including Kate Nash, The Holidays, Jonathan Boulet, and Muscles. The band will be adding more impressive entries to its resume soon enough – Tuesday September 25 will see the lads play with UK indie favourites Mystery Jets, as well join in the fun of The Valley Fiesta on October 27. Listen to the band’s new single ‘Courageous’ here.
