Travel back in time at this fun, free and family-friendly historian festival
As much as living in the current age has its perks, sometimes slowing down and looking to the pages of history can teach us a thing or two. From the way we played through to the music we enjoyed, it can be both fun and enlightening to look back on times gone by for entertainment, inspiration and good old-fashioned curiosity. The Young Historians Festival is a free event happening at Newstead House on Sunday July 7 as part of the Lord Mayor’s Children’s Concert Series, bringing a taste of the past to the current generation.
The Young Historians Festival will transport curious kids right back to our city’s storied past – and it is aptly being held at Newstead House, Brisbane’s oldest standing residence. Amongst the heritage surrounds of this amazing structure, kids of all ages can soak up the atmosphere of a festival that has been carefully curated to include a fun day of performances, discovery and play. Whether your little ones are hands-on or prefer to sit back and watch, there is something for every enquiring mind to enjoy. The vibe will be totally immersive – think 19th century costumers decked out in full finery, plus old-school lawn games like croquet and coits available to play throughout the day.
Fancy getting right amongst the action? The Young Historians Festival will provide plenty of opportunities to give some vintage pastimes a try. Hula-hooping workshops will give punters a chance to give twirling a whirl, while the Washday Wonders station gives kids a look into how laundry used to be done (hint: with a lot of elbow grease!). Pony rides, nostalgic Punch and Judy Shows, plus a covert treasure hunt all combine to round out the fun-filled activities on offer. Those of all ages can enjoy a live performance by award-winning bluegrass band The Company – the high-energy fiddle, guitar and banjo tunes are bound to get toes tapping. All that historical play is bound to work up an appetite, so Brisbane City Council has assembled some of our city’s favourite food trucks to keep crowds fed and watered.
