Greet Judaism at the You Don’t Have To Be Jewish Film Festival
It doesn’t matter if the closest you have come to the Jewish religion is a Natalie Portman movie marathon, a new film festival has arrived in Brisbane that explores Judaism, without the need to sport a Yarmulke. The filmic foray visiting the State Library of Queensland this weekend is the cleverly titled, You Don’t Have To Be Jewish Film Festival.
For two days, over the weekend of February 16–17, the film festival will be moving into the South Bank learning centre. A collection of 12 features and documentaries has been gathered by the library and the Jewish Film Foundation of Australia to screen throughout. The cinematic foray is a journey into the religion, and its surrounding culture, giving locals the chance to preview films that have not yet been screened worldwide. Some of the movies to be shown include End and Free Men, and documentaries Jealous of the Birds, After the Silence, Pizza in Auschwitz and The Courage of Strangers.
Perhaps the You Don’t Have To Be Jewish Film Festival highlight will be the appearance of Philippe Mora. On Saturday, the French-born Australian director will be providing film buffs with the opportunity to learn all the tips and tricks with a masterclass in the gonzo-style filmmaking of the 1970s. Philippe’s legendary trio of films, Gertrude Stein Mystery or Some Like It Art, German Sons and Continuity will also be played back to back.
