Join the theatrical discussion at World Theatre Festival

Brisbane Powerhouse is revered for its celebrations of the arts from around the world. Like a lively museum exhibition, plays, theatrical productions, musicians, dancing and comedy interweave with each other in the single destination. This week the World Theatre Festival returns to the cultural hub, presenting a display of the globe’s latest and greatest theatrical pieces.

A foray into contemporary, engaging and challenging themes, the festival attempts to change the premise of what theatre is through a curated selection of theatre, music, film and stimulating in conversations.

As part of World Theatre Festival, the performance of Kitchen (You’ve Never Had It So Good) will be showing from February 20–24. An ode to one of pop art’s biggest stars, Andy Warhol, the play recreates his infamous film Kitchen live on stage. While the original starred a collection of Andy’s muses (including the stylish Edie Sedgewick), this modern interpretation has been formed by the German and British collective arts group, Gob Squad.

The show is still set amidst New York City’s underground in 1965, but is a reconstruction of the film to illuminate history (more specifically Andy’s era) for the new generation, with flaunting themes of modernity and the questioning of authenticity abundant. For those curious to know more about the piece, a Q&A session will follow the Thursday evening performance.
