Unite against violence this November at the White Ribbon Breakfast
With so much happening the past year and a half, some of the most important social issues we face as a country have taken a back seat. One such matter is domestic and family violence, a pertinent problem that bares a staggering set of statistics that cannot be ignored. To help put the spotlight back on this heartbreaking issue and what we can do to collectively take a step in the right direction, the Queensland Government has once again organised the White Ribbon Day Breakfast. Taking place at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday November 26, this morning meet-up aims to to educate and inspire change – and fill some hungry bellies in the process.
Combining delicious breakfast bites and social justice, the White Ribbon Day Breakfast is an annual event where early birds are treated to a sit-down feast whilst an expertly curated panel discusses current issues and important tactics surrounding the domestic violence crisis. This year’s event will be an opportunity for Queenslanders to show their support for gender equality and learn how Government, businesses and the community can work together to prevent and respond to domestic and family violence. So far this year, the Queensland Government has established the Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce, which has been undertaking wide-ranging community consultation, and also held the first-ever Housing and Domestic and Family Violence Roundtable, which investigated long-term, safe and affordable housing solutions for people impacted by violence.
ABC’s Matt Wordsworth will be Master of Ceremonies at this year’s White Ribbon Breakfast, which will also feature some of Queensland’s most respected advocates who will speak on issues including gender equality, sexual violence, community-led responses and Government reform. Matt will be joined by the Honourable Margaret McMurdo AC as Keynote Speaker, as well as Inspector Ben Martain from the Queensland Police Service, Vice Captain of the Brisbane Lions Harris Andrews, Dr Brian Sullivan from the Responsible Men Program, and educator and public speaker Michael Jeh. Each guest will bring their knowledge to the breakfast table and approach the discussion with particular focus on critical issues such as eliminating non-physical abuse and opportunities to improve women’s experiences in the criminal justice system.
