Two countries unite in Scripsi Scriptum at Judith Wright
Remember pen pals? Remember writing letters to friends who had moved away, students in foreign lands and relatives at Christmas? Composing a recent tale on paper in slow, precise cursive was once the only possible form of communication.
But with technology advancing every day, we’ve left behind the slow interactions of yesteryear, embracing the instantaneous bursts of knowledge about the happenings in friends’ lives gathered via text and social media.
Inspired by acts of both old-fashioned letter writing and modern social networking between the dancers of Brisbane’s Expressions Dance Company and Switzerland’s Cathy Sharp Dance Ensemble, a program of two contemporary dance works realises Australian and European dance styles side by side.
With one performance choreographed by Natalie Weir and the other Cathy Sharp, Scripsi Scriptum paints a joint imaginative picture of the art of communication, while retaining each company’s personal vocabularies.
Contrasting between old and new methods of communication, the pieces share subtle links forming a dialogue about the history of communication and its effect on modern language. Following on from the opening season at The Roxy Hotel in Basel, Switzerland, this Australian premiere highlights a cultural exchange of language and contemporary dance technique between two countries.
