Witness Brisbane laid bare – Spencer Tunick announces his first Australian exhibition

On October 27, acclaimed New York artist Spencer Tunick is set to shut down the Story Bridge for a new live art installation ‘RISING TIDE’. In anticipation of this piece, Brisbane Powerhouse has announced it will be hosting Spencer’s first-ever Australian exhibition from September 28 to November 10. Spencer Tunick has remained one of contemporary art’s most recognised names, documenting live nudes en mass amidst a range of unique public locations – from the headquarters of the United Nations to a parking garage in Amsterdam. This year marks Spencer’s 30th anniversary of documentary live nude scenes, having completed more than 100 installations around the globe using dozens, hundreds or thousands of participants.

Last year, the Brisbane River was added to the line-up of iconic locations that Spencer had photographed, with the New York-based artist joining Brisbane Powerhouse’s MELT Festival to create his ‘TIDE’ series, documenting a cast of around 150 nude bodies upon the shores of the Brisbane River.

After the success of this initial piece, Spencer announced a sequel, with ‘RISING TIDE’ slated for this year’s MELT. In anticipation of the 2500 live nude figures set to descend on Story Bridge next month, Brisbane Powerhouse has just unveiled TIDE Exhibition, which will show a projected video piece created during his first visit to Brisbane.

TIDE Exhibition’s debut marks not only an Australian first, but also the first time the illustrious artist has displayed the photographs and video from his live nude installations to the public. Find out more about this new exhibition via the MELT Festival website.
