GOMA is one of Brisbane’s most renowned cultural icons, thanks to its consistent rotation of lavish exhibitions from all corners of the earth. The gallery is extending its art collection into the surrounding garden with the installation of major public sculpture The World Turns by Michael Parekowhai on the riverbank. The bronze sculpture stands at five metres high and was commissioned last year to celebrate the fifth birthday of GOMA and the 20th of the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. Keeping watch over the neighbouring river, The World Turns is certainly a conversation starter, consisting of three huge interrelated bronze casts. These include a bookend of an acrobatic elephant, a kuril water rat and a chair in which the viewer can sit and contemplate.
