Celebrating ten years of The Weekend Edition – a special note to our readers from our managing editor
Today, March 8, 2022, we celebrate ten years of The Weekend Edition. Let that sink in. Ten. Years. A lot has happened in a decade and we could not have reached such an incredible milestone without the support of the many people who have championed The Weekend Edition over the years – our team members, our partners and advertisers, and our readers.
It’s not often that I write in first person. Today, however, is a special occasion.
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Chrisanthi Demos and I am the managing editor of The Weekend Edition. I have had the pleasure of being part of The Weekend Edition team since its inception – in fact, I started working in the sales team for map magazine, our ever-inspirational predecessor (more on map here!) in 2009. So to me, The Weekend Edition is my first baby – and today my baby turns ten years old.
But today isn’t about me. It’s about every single person who has touched The Weekend Edition over the last ten years and helped shape it to become the publication you know and love. It’s about our undying supporters – the people who have seen us through thick and thin, through floods and pandemics and a whole lot more – who help ensure that this tenacious little Southeast Queensland-based publication holds its own in the deep sea of digital media.
First, I would like to thank our visionary founder, Carl Lindgren. After more than ten years of creating positive media with map magazine, Carl identified a gap in the burgeoning digital-media landscape. He set out to create a lifestyle publication that would help the people of Brisbane to discover new meaning to the weekend – a platform to help them sleep in, slow down and enjoy the spoils of our city. Ten years on, The Weekend Edition continues to do that, every Thursday at 10:00 am (and 11:00 am on the Gold Coast), uncovering the best places to eat, drink and play in Brisbane to help plan the perfect weekend. I feel honoured to have called Carl my mentor and am forever grateful for the guidance, passion and wisdom he imparted to me. Thank you Carlos, for trusting me with The Weekend Edition and for making sure I always remembered to dream. To read more about Carl and his incredible passion for positive media, head over here.
To our partners, advertisers and friends of The Weekend Edition, many who have supported us consistently for ten years, thank you for being part of our journey. As a free publication we could not have reached this milestone without you. We are so fortunate to work with such an incredible group of people who share the vision of The Weekend Edition and champion what we do.
To The Weekend Edition team both past and present, thank you for your tireless efforts and for sharing my (and Carl’s) passion. I have worked with such an inspirational collective over the past decade – each and every one of you has helped shape The Weekend Edition and it stands as strong as it does today because of the people who have contributed to it. To our current team – James, Jade, Sara, Ellie, Meredith and Liz – you make each work day an absolute joy. The energy and camaraderie in our office (even when we are working from home) is second to none, and I am consistently inspired by your creativity and innovation. To our design-savvy siblings at map creative and Colour Chiefs, the custodians of Carl’s legacy, we thank you for your continued support and the vital role you play in The Weekend Edition’s story.
To every person we have interviewed or written about, thank you for sharing and trusting us with your stories. The Brisbane we write about would not exist without the awe-inspiring, hard-working humans behind each and every restaurant, cafe, bar, gallery, boutique, service, venue or event we cover.
Finally, to our loyal readers. Thank you for turning to The Weekend Edition each week for your dose of local goodness. Carl once said that we never take for granted the words that we write – the words you consume – and that thought remains with me to this day. I look forward to sharing the stories of our little corner of the world with you for many, many years in the future.
As we enter our tenth year, I am so thrilled for what is to come. This year will see some exciting developments for The Weekend Edition, including new partnerships, huge competitions and the relaunch of our beloved EAT/drink Awards after a COVID-related hiatus. Be sure to keep an eye on the site for what promises to be our biggest and best year ever. And if you haven’t subscribed already, I think it’s about time you did so right here!
Thank you again for an amazing decade of The Weekend Edition – here’s to the next ten!
