New live music venue The Triffid opens in Newstead

Prominent industry icons have transformed an historic WWII hangar in Newstead into an 800-capacity live music venue with a cracking good beer garden.

The Brisbane music scene is set for a shake-up, as a major new venue swings open its doors on Thursday October 30. Former Powderfinger bassist John Collins has joined forces with the luminaries behind Splendour In The Grass, Falls Festival and Secret Sounds Touring, Paul Piticco and Jessica Ducrou, and Brisbane hospitality identity Brett McCall to bring The Triffid to fruition. It’s been 18 months of hard work for the creators, but tonight will see punters entering the transformed WWII hangar on Stratton Street for the very first time.

The live room and part of the beer garden will open for the free Triffid Seeds showcase of local emerging acts over the next few nights, while the official Launch Party on Saturday November 8 will see Saskwatch, The Creases and MT Warning perform in the 800-capacity venue. The gig calendar is filling quickly with a line-up of local and international acts, from Bernard Fanning, Stonefield and Megan Washington to Conor Oberst and The Dead Daisies.

But it’s not all about the music at The Triffid; the venue also boasts a massive 490-square-metre beer garden where locals can kick back with gourmet burgers, fries and the usual drinks suspects from 11:00 am Sunday through to Tuesday. The outdoor space will be the perfect hangout come summer, particularly on Sunday afternoons when Triple J’s Sarah Howells curates weekly Triffid Roots sessions from November 9.
