Be captivated by the opulent spectacle of The Sleeping Beauty

The world of ballet is often associated with pure magic – timeless stories are combined with breathtaking costumes and opulent sets to take you away from your everyday life. One of the most shining examples of this is The Sleeping Beauty, a classic production that personifies everything that ballet stands for no matter how many incarnations it goes through. The Australian Ballet’s lavish production is returning to QPAC from February 24 to March 4 for a special encore season that is sure to dazzle.

After making its debut in 2015 to high praise, this brand new production of The Sleeping Beauty left audiences struck with its slick take on the ballet standard. We all know the story, but here is a brief rundown for the uninitiated – at her christening, Princess Aurora is cursed by the wicked fairy Carabosse (who was quite salty after not receiving an invitation to the proceedings). On her 16th birthday, the princess falls asleep until she’s woken by true love’s kiss. Dripping in Baroque golds and creams that are punctuated with vivid colour, this storybook world full of fairies, princes and woodland nymphs casts a spell of wonder from beginning to end.

With more than 30 years behind him in the professional dancing sphere, director David McAllister’s experience rings loud and clear when it comes to The Sleeping Beauty. Starting as a dancer himself and now sitting at the helm of the Australian Ballet as Artistic Director, David’s vision is realised with the help of a team that has made no compromise on quality. Tchaikovsky’s inimitable score and Marius Petipa’s iconic choreography have been paired with genius costume and set design from Gabriela Tylesova to breathe new life into this staple that has been captivating minds (and eyes) for years.

If your life could use a sprinkling of magic, you can snap up tickets to The Sleeping Beauty right here – be sure to get in quick, as this show has been known to sell out.
