Queensland Theatre Company portrays the powerful story of The Secret River

Following a sold out season in Sydney, the ambitious stage adaption of The Secret River comes to Brisbane for the first time.

Based on Kate Grenville’s award-winning historical novel The Secret River comes a powerful adaption for the stage. The result? A stunning and moving piece of theatre that will have you experiencing all kinds of feelings.

Presented by Queensland Theatre Company, The Secret River tells the story of William Thornhill, a convict from the slums of London who arrives in Australia where he given an opportunity to shed his past and build a new life for his family. On the banks of the Hawkesbury River, he plants a crop and lays claim to the soil in which it grows. Little does he know, Hawkesbury is already home to a family from the Dharug people, whose existence depends on that land. And so ensues the bloody tale of two families divided by conflict, culture and land rights.

This epic, poetic, richly theatrical adaptation of The Secret River is sure to leave you pondering long after the curtain draws, but just a head’s up: the performance features a few expletives and a touch of violence, so it’s probably best you leave the kiddies with a babysitter.
