The Redlands Roaming Weekend List
Made for days spent weaving through streets by car and waterways by boat, the Redlands is a charming and relaxed pocket of coastal towns just half an hour southeast of bustling Brisbane. This weekend we’re getting back to our colonial roots, discovering the heritage trails of the area, and letting our curiosity lead us to roam unknown islands.
If you find yourself in town on a Sunday morning, the Cleveland Village Farmers Market runs each week from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm. Set along tree-lined Bloomfield Street, the market bursts with a tempting array of fresh produce, gourmet meats, fish and dairy, locally made treats and baked goods, as well as art, antiques, plants and flowers.
Next up, set your sights on the Southern Moreton Bay Tourist Drive, which will see you slowly curve your way past the historic courthouse, built in 1853, and the sweet red-tipped Cleveland Lighthouse. Retrace your path to the start of the trail, ending your scenic drive at The Grand View Hotel in North Street for a refreshing beverage overlooking the water. The two-storey hotel first began life as an inn in 1849, making the heritage-listed dwelling the oldest licensed establishment in Queensland. While you’re in the area, you can try your hand at catching a fish off the Wellington Point Jetty, or if it’s low tide, walk all the way out to King Island – just don’t get caught out there if the tide swells again.
From Wellington Point make your way towards Mount Cotton to drop by the cellar door at Sirromet Winery. Take a winery tour, or simple settle back with a few local drops followed by a lunch of Moreton Bay whiting fillets or coconut king prawns in the restaurant. If you care to earn yourself an extra day in the area, rest your head in one of lakeside eco cabins at Mount Cotton Guest House. This way you can spend a second day weaving a little boat amongst the passages connecting many a tiny island off Redland Bay. While many folk know of the adventures that lie ahead on Stradbroke Island, a gamut of smaller islands also reside off the coastline, ripe for exploration and discovery.
