TWE Rainy Days Weekend List

The Rainy Days Weekend List

The grey blanket that cloaked the sky last week delivered a dense downpour that made us want to pull the covers over our heads and remain snuggled up in bed for most of the day. If you don’t have to trudge into the office, or a dreary day falls on a play day, here are a few suggestions for starving off cabin fever and keeping cosy.

If you’re the adventurous type, a little rain isn’t likely to dampen your day plan. Slip on some colourful socks and gumboots and shrug on a rain poncho and head about your normal weekend morn. The grounds of the West End Markets tend to suffer a bit when the sky weeps – though we’ve often witnessed kind farmers giving unprepared punters piggyback rides over the largest of puddles.

If you prefer your toes to stay indoors, safe from dampness, pull out the apron and flick the switch on the oven for a morning of baking. Think warm, hearty pot meals and gooey chocolate treats to graze on throughout the day. Serve up a mushroom risotto or rich stew in a bowl that you can wrap cool hands around, while a sticky pudding or plate of chocolate cookies warm your belly and your heart.

Set up camp in the great indoors by making a pillow fort in the lounge room, stringing up sheets like a teepee from the picture rail and enjoy a floor picnic. Or if your cloud-like bed is your sanctuary of choice, pop on fresh sheets, pile on some blankets, make a pot of tea and settle back to catch up on some reading.

Stay in your pyjamas all day – perhaps switching the ones from last night’s snooze for a fresh daytime set – and plan your own film festival. Invite friends over on the condition they bring popcorn and draft up a list of those epic films that you haven’t brought yourself to watch yet because they’re a little too serious for a jovial Friday night in. Check out Shame, Sleeping Beauty, Norwegian Wood, The Diving and the Butterfly, 12 Years a Slave, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Melancholia, The Tree of Life.
