Acclaimed picture book The Rabbits comes to life at QPAC

The iconic children’s book by John Marsden and Shaun Tan has been given a musical adaptation, which is set to capture imaginations all over again.

Part allegorical tale about colonisation, part dark adventure story, The Rabbits was and still is one of the most captivating books of its kind since it was published in 1998. The highly intricate illustrations and minimalistic recounting of the story through the eyes of the colonised created a lasting impression on the minds of many, and now the story has been restructured for the stage with a musical score to boot. The Rabbits will be at QPAC for five days only from March 16–20.

Opera Australia and the Barking Gecko Theatre Company has put together the production, boasting cast of talented opera singers and music performers. Kate Miller-Heidke wrote the musical score and will be performing at the QPAC shows, which also features gorgeous set pieces constructed by Gabriela Tylesova. The Rabbits has won four Helpmann Awards in categories such as Best New Australian Work, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design and Best Presentation For Children. If you were enchanted by John Marsden’s book as a youngster, or would like to introduce your own children to the tale, head to the QPAC website to book tickets.
