The Last Hurrah: Woodland’s final weekend

The time has come for Woodland to close. While the sorrow is overwhelming when we lose a much-loved weekend venue, The Weekend Edition was chipper to learn that owner Matt Brady will be using his newly found weekend freedom to get a little fresh mountain air in his lungs and some nature under his well-dressed toes – with his dedicated captaining of the Woodland and The Outpost ships leaving no spare time for such adventures over the past two years. In a few months’ time, something new will fill the space but, for now, we will celebrate and commiserate the end of this (short) era.

Dear Woodland,

For two years you’ve brought us a wood-filled space to flail about on the dance floor while sipping a tart gin and tonic – many a splash sticking to the floor. Down a dark, dank laneway, a little to the left, up an awkward first step and into the upstairs den where the vibrations from The Mustang penetrate the walls, you became a regular haven for the young and often not-so-fabulous. Your sound system wasn’t perfect, but you made up for it by delivering some big names and local favourites. You created something wonderful in an empty space we never knew was there, and you’ve inspired the opening of other hidden digs around your faithful town. We will miss your wall of frames, mad tunes and the reckless abandon that your dance floor delivered us come about 1:00 am.

Yours in tear-stained sorrow,
Brisbane

Woodland’s last hurrah is on this Saturday from 9:00 pm with free entry all night.
