Get creative with your canine at The Good Dog! Film Festival

When a young Liz Taylor took to the screen with her furry companion in the 1943 classic Lassie it cemented the start of a new kind of movie star – the dog. Fans of this genre can now take inspiration from flicks like Red Dog, Air Bud and Beethoven and transform it into their own directorial debut, thanks to this latest film festival.

If you find yourself with an inkling to become the next Scorsese or Burton, as well as possessing a passion for all things dog-related, the Good Dog! Film Festival could be your ticket to stardom. Launching on August 17 in New South Wales’ Balmain, the festival intends to display man’s best friend in all his forms. Film festival creator Anny Slater is a proud dog lover and filmmaker – her film The Ball (starring her own pooch) was nominated at the 2004 Oscars.

With Bruce Petty on the judging panel, the festival has already attracted movies from all corners of the globe – including Canada, New Zealand, London and New York. The conditions of entry are as follows: all films are to be a maximum of 15 minutes in length and star a dog or be dog-related in a genre of comedy, drama, documentary or animation.

Submissions are open till July 15 – you can register here.
