The Dance in the Dark Weekend List
Thanks to Fatboy Slim & Riva Star we’ve felt the desire to break out a few box steps and crumps at all hours of the day of late. Once an addictive beat has positioned itself permanently in our mind, we’re left eagerly and impatiently looking forward to the weekend to put the track into motion.
Providing an environment for such dance desires to be executed, No Lights No Lycra is the 2009 creation of unruly dance students Alice Glenn and Heidi Barrett. Word of mouth spread the news that a dimly lit space in Melbourne would for a brief time be occupied by the wildly pulsating bodies of locals who like to let their dance moves loose like no one is watching. With no leotards, no steps to learn, no teacher and no coordination required, No Lights No Lycra indulges our whim for a spot of loungeroom dancing under the glow of disco lights.
Seeing as we’re yet to implement Lunch Beat in Brisbane, we’re geared up for some all-out No Lights No Lycra dance time when it rolls into town at The Basement at Metro Arts next month. Locally, NLNL also runs fortnightly in West End. In the meantime, take a moment to switch out the lights, pop on the lava lamp, pump ‘Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat’ and feel the freedom one night at home this weekend.
Alternatively, put your dance passion to the public test by heading along to the Brisbane Fringe Festival Opening Party this Friday and croon to the sound of New Orleans street music. Follow up your Creole-style weekend with a Sunday afternoon cook-up of jambalaya and fried pickles, enjoyed in the fading sunshine with friends and a bounty of crisp riesling.
