The Culturalist Series: Take a sensory journey with The Weekend Edition’s playlist
To celebrate the launch of the Culturalist app, The Weekend Edition is presenting the Culturalist Series. Over the next five weeks, we will explore the Cultural Precinct, showcasing the itineraries and activities to be experienced throughout. This week, The Weekend Edition team crafted its own unique playlist, ready to take a sensory journey through QAGOMA, QPAC, Queensland Museum and the State Library of Queensland.
Browsing through the variety of events, exhibitions and activities in the playlist categories in the Culturalist app, it was difficult to narrow down our selection. Being lovers of all types of experiences, whether it be taste, sight, touch or sound, we decided to treat you to a true sensory smorgasbord.
We kick off our itinerary this weekend, discovering the history, ideas and art of our first peoples through QAG’s Indigenous Australian Collection: Everywhen, Everywhere. The exhibition presents historical and contemporary works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, and includes installations, bark paintings, immersive experiences and video works. If you can’t make it this weekend don’t fear – Everywhen, Everywhere is a permanent exhibition. Next, we get set to don our finest theatre attire for a magical night at the ballet. QPAC is presenting Queensland Ballet’s The Sleeping Beauty from Friday October 23 to Saturday October 31, telling the fabled story of the sleeping princess loved the world over.
Who said the Cultural Precinct only came alive on weekends? Plan to start your week with a bang on Monday October 26 at QPAC’s Concert Hall with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra’s Riccardo Minasi Violin. He joins the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra with his baroque violin for one night only in the Concert Hall. If you have a day off through the week, need a mental day off, or just have to wait until the weekend, gather your little friends or just embrace your inner child with a day adventuring through Queensland Museum and Sciencentre. Explore the science of sound at Sound Show, which allows you to participate and, of course, make a whole lot of noise! Then head over to Rescue, an interactive exhibition that allows you to experience high-pressure rescue-based situations, such as flying a helicopter simulator, escaping a smoke-filled room and report the rescue news on TV.
Our playlist continues to Friday October 30 at GOMA. Begin your evening by tantalising your tastebuds with dinner at the award-winning GOMA Restaurant, then continuing the sensory feast with a screening of El Topo in the GOMA Cinema as part of The Western film program. On Saturday November 7, set your sights on the State Library of Queensland. Begin your morning with a traditional possum-skin armband workshop with Glennys Briggs and Carol McGregor, who are teaching the traditional methods of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander craft as part of the monthly kreative kuril workshop series. Then prepare for an afternoon of activism at the Make War a Distant Memory Community Day, where you can listen to a collection of artists, academics and political activists on the topics of peace and protest, try your hand at one of the free workshops, watch a dance performance or nibble on delectable food and drinks.
