The Culturalist Series: Explore Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture through the Indigenous playlists
For our second instalment of the Culturalist Series, we take you on a trip with the Indigenous playlist category, which showcases the amazing culture of Australia’s indigenous history and population through a series of tours, workshops, exhibitions and performances across QAGOMA, QPAC, Queensland Museum and the State Library of Queensland.
After creating our own playlist last week, we had a tough time choosing from the array of events and activities showcased in the Culturalist app’s Indigenous playlist category. Luckily we managed to narrow it down to a handful to kick off your itinerary!
Our first choice takes you to the Queensland Museum, which is currently hosting the incredibly moving This is my heritage exhibition, where you can discover stories and cultural revelations told by 12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders from across Queensland. We couldn’t help but be drawn next to the APA Showcase 2015 Knock Knock, which sees young Aboriginal artists perform music, acting and dance in a mesmerising theatrical experience that creates a tapestry for a unique pattern of renewal. You can check it out at QPAC from November 5–7.
We can’t wait to be inspired at the State Library of Queensland’s showcase of mixed media art by Indigenous Australians living with a disability in Walan Giiny (strong heart), which you can visit from Saturday November 7 until February 21, 2016. If you happen to visit on November 7, test your crafting skills at a workshop on how to make your own traditional possum skin armbands. Afterwards, continue your cultural journey to QAG’s Indigenous Australian Collection: Everywhen, Everywhere. You’re sure to be awestruck by this long-running display dedicated to showcasing Indigenous Australian art and exploring the ideas of the Dreaming.
Later this month, QPAC will once again host the wonderful annual event series Clancestry, celebrating the art and cultural practices of the world’s First Nations Peoples, with particular focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. You can experience thought-provoking live performances, exhibitions, workshops, free events and conversations from November 30 to December 6, all of which will bring together traditional and modern practices.
