The call of the wild at Nick Brandt exhibition
Photographer Nick Brandt has travelled a long way from the overcrowded streets of London to the abandoned plains of the Serengeti. His passion for animals, particularly those native to East Africa, has proven a catalyst to his creative process, and act as continued inspiration for his haunting photographs.
Nick’s biography is colourful – London-born and educated at the prestigious Central St Martins School of Art, he began a successful career as a director of music videos. When filming Michael Jackson’s ‘Earth Song’ in Tanzania in 1995, Brandt discovered the beauty of East Africa and traded in his video camera for an SLR. Since discovering the world of photography, he has been behind the creation of intense and moving portraits of East African wildlife. Brandt’s passion for the landscape and his interest in environmental preservation combine to form intimate and moving pictures of the life that abounds in Africa.
Brandt’s works are definitely not your average animal photograph – his pieces are no cute snapshot of the family pet. Instead he captures the wildlife of Africa in intimate portraits that creates human-like qualities within each. The simple shots incorporate a use of soft sepia techniques, making them particularly evocative.
Brisbane lens-enthusiasts will be lucky enough to view Brandt’s work for themselves with his latest exhibition On This Earth A Shadow Falls in town from April 18–29. Displaying images from his first two books, as well as new pictures that will feature in an upcoming third publication, the exhibition is being held at 15–19 James Street, New Farm, and supported by Source Photographica.
