The Take A Break Weekend List

The Take A Break Weekend List

We’ve been pushing ourselves the last two weeks to hold on strong to those resolutions, and while we’re feeling good about the little achievements, the perfectionists in us have left our energy levels a little deflated. Here’s a few ways to take a little break this weekend and catch up on rest after the initial start-of-year excitement.

Sleep in. Easier said than done for the early morning exerciser and weekend busy bee. This weekend, make lunch or afternoon dates instead of breakfast-time catch-ups. Remind yourself the farmers markets run until about lunchtime, so no need to roll out of bed at the crack of dawn to score the best apples – you might even save a few pennies with end-of-day discounts. If you really struggle to sleep in once the sun has risen, invest in an eye mask, make sure your room is cool enough, and keep some lavender oil nearby to help you relax if your eyes start to flutter at 5:00 am.

Slow down. Upon waking, read a little in bed first. No need to rush anywhere, your day can’t start without you. Perhaps make a cup of tea and take it back to bed, reading a book or magazine until you feel you’ve absorbed enough literature for the morning. Shower and dress in your newest threads and take yourself to a nearby cafe for a lazy brunch. Savour each bite, people watch a little, or take your book along for some more page-turning.

Enjoy. Your body is probably feeling pretty relaxed after all this sloth-like action. Take yourself for an afternoon walk as the sun is setting, watching the sky turn from blue to gold to pink to navy, or attend a late yoga class. Some gentle exercise will ensure you’ve burnt a little energy throughout the day, and wear out those muscles just slightly so you can satisfyingly sink back under the covers tonight. Finish the day with friends, perhaps seeing some music, heading out to a nice dinner, or grabbing fish and chips or other picnic-friendly food and heading to Kangaroo Point, River Quay or New Farm Park for a casual meal by the water. No partying for you this evening – if you’re still feeling wide awake, pop a movie on while you lie in bed. And the moment you find yourself dozing, don’t resist for the sake of the film – relish the chance to get a good night’s sleep.
