The dance of love with Syncopation at QUT
Set in New York City in 1912, Syncopation is a performance entwining comedy, romance and drama, all the while in a whir of ballroom dancing.
Follow Henry Ribolow, a Jewish meatpacker who is desperate to fulfill his dreams of becoming a ballroom dancer. Anna Bianchi is an Italian seamstress, similarly drowning in discontent until she responds to Henry’s ad the paper: ‘Give your life a lift. Wanted: A dance partner to dance for royalty.’
The pair tackle an incredible arrangement of ballroom routines and impressive steps, from the promenade to the foxtrot and the tango. As their partnership in dance unfolds, sparks fly and soon enough there’s enough drama and romance in the mix to give any love story a good run for its money.
Each piece in the performance was choreographed by Mark Hodge (of Dancing with the Stars fame) and the show directed by Broadway’s Stephen Lloyd Helper. The performance is also suitably accompanied by the melodies of Gershwin, Joplin and Berlin.
Starring Emma Palmer and Justin Stewart Cotta, Syncopation will be performed on July 6 and 7 at QUT Gardens Theatre. Tickets to the show can be purchased on the QUT website.
