Celebrate the weird and wonderful world of contemporary dance at SUPERCELL

Let me hear your body talk, Brisbane – we know that dance is a universal language that most everyone can understand, so it comes as no surprise that there are so many beautiful variations of the art form. One of the most compelling styles is undoubtedly the contemporary genre, blending narrative and mind-bending moves to create the ultimate form of self-expression. SUPERCELL: Festival of Contemporary Dance Brisbane is an ambitious offering coming to the Judith Wright Centre from February 18–25 to bring the wildest forms of body movement from around the world to our own backyard.

Co-founded and curated by dream team Kate Usher and Glyn Roberts, the inaugural SUPERCELL has been created to celebrate Queensland’s place in the dance world while connecting us with artists and companies both home-grown and global. A huge part of the festival is inclusion – everyone from admirers of the art form to the professionals is invited to get amongst the action. SUPERCELL will hold a selection of workshops, dance classes and behind-the-scenes experiences for people from all walks of life to enjoy. Don’t freak out if you’re no Martha Graham, though – the festival’s idea of celebrating dance can be as chill as mingling with the performers over a drink.

The whole SUPERCELL program is packed with goodness, but there are a few knockouts that simply can’t be missed. Closing piece Depthless is a stunning collaboration between choreographer Kate Harman and multi-ARIA award winning musician Ben Ely (of Regurgitator fame). Festivalgoers can also feast their eyes upon a selection of works from Delta Moves, an innovative project hailing from China’s pan-Pearl River Delta region. Another highlight is Amrita Hepi’s equally powerful and provocative work Passing. Her name might sound familiar, and for good reason – Amrita is the mastermind behind those killer Justin Bieber and Beyoncé dance classes that have swept the nation.

If this has got you in the mood to celebrate dance, you can check out the whole SUPERCELL program and purchase tickets to specific events right here.
