Snap that flower field pic at Sunshine & Sunflower Day
When life deals you a drought, grow sunflowers and they will come. This is what a farming family in Kalbar has done, and the result is a one-day celebration of flowers and family-friendly fun. Gather your gang and get ready to go road-tripping on Saturday March 27, and make sure to stop and smell the, uh, sunflowers at the inaugural Sunshine & Sunflower Day.
A real ‘when life hands you lemons, make lemonade’ moment, Sunshine & Sunflower Day bloomed from the devastating aftermath of drought. Kalbar-based farming family Russell and Jenny Jenner had been struggling due to the ongoing Queensland drought and so instead of planting hay this season, they decided to plant sunflowers – 200,000 of them, to be exact. Now, these golden beauties are in bloom and they are a picture-perfect canvas for the area’s first sunflower festival.
The festival has a huge program of fun-filled events – visitors can wander through the sunflower field (and yes, get that cheeky Insta), stretch out at a yoga session amongst the flowers, get crafty with art classes, and test their culinary skills with cooking classes using, you guessed it, sunflowers. Hungry folk can join Scenic Rim ambassador chef Richard Ousby for a sunset dinner backdropped by thousands of florals or if you want to live out those high-flying dreams, you can take a helicopter tour of the area and the greater Scenic Rim region.
