Storytime turns sour with Twisted Tales

Storytime turns sour with Twisted Tales

The thought of a fairytale might conjure up images of sweetness and light, but if you take a peek into the pages of a Brothers Grimm or stick to the original Hans Christian Andersen, you’ll find that fairy tales were originally a combination of wickedness, magic and intrigue.

Taking fairytales back to their gloomy early days is Twisted Tales – a twist on the storybooks of yesteryear. In the performance, Yunyu (a former Triple J Unearthed winner) places a devilish twist on stories that range from Alice in Wonderland to Pinocchio. The multi-media experience blends together song, story and animation and will be performed on May 25–26.

Joining Yunyu’s team is her five-piece band and designer Imogen Ross, as well as a heavy dose of manga cartoons, thanks to the collaboration of artist Queenie Chan. Each song tells the story of a different fairytale character, albeit one who is transported into modern times – like Dorothy, who finds herself far away from Kansas, but this time as a cosmonaut lost in space.
