Drift away with South Pacific at QPAC

Drift away with South Pacific at QPAC

Set on sunny beaches rimmed with lush rainforests, the critically acclaimed and much-loved musical South Pacific suits our climate perfectly.

The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is located on an unnamed island during World War II. Following the romantic entanglements of the nurses, navy men and locals thrown together by the conflict, South Pacific is notable for its frank treatment of race – a fact made all the more remarkable considering its first performance was in 1948, with the 1958 film adaptation having been hailed as both a musical hallmark and a camp classic.

Since then, the musical has won numerous awards. This new production, directed by Bartlett Sher, swept the 2008 Tony Awards and has played to sold out houses for more than two years with its superb renditions of classics like ‘Some Enchanted Evening’, ‘Bali Ha’i’ and ‘I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair’.

Arriving at QPAC in Brisbane after stellar seasons in Melbourne and Sydney, South Pacific will feature opera star Teddy Tahu Rhodes, who will perform alongside television icon Lisa McCune, and Christine Anu. Featuring a full live orchestra, South Pacific is running until January 27.
