Single Asian Female returns to La Boite with a new dose of humour, heart and sass

We have a lot to thank La Boite Theatre for, but one of its best exports of late is undoubtedly the red-hot runaway success Single Asian Female. Michelle Law’s poignant, powerful and ultimately hilarious play struck a serious cord when it made its debut two years ago, and it shows no signs of slowing down. The sell-out sensation is coming back home for a second round, bringing its trademark humour, heart and even a surprise new star.

Single Asian Female burst onto the Australian theatre scene during its 2017 debut at La Boite Theatre, revealing a layered story that was fierce, funny and heartfelt all at once. Viewers were invited into the world of the Wong family, a group of whip-smart women navigating the murky waters of family competition, dark secrets, cultural (and generational) gaps as well as racial issues. The story obviously resonated, earning it sell-out seasons at its home of La Boite as well as Sydney’s Belvoir Theatre.

This brand-new season of Single Asian Female comes with an incredibly pleasant casting surprise – Michelle Law herself will be picking up the role of Zoe. After her success in the SBS webseries Homecoming Queens in 2017 (which she also co-wrote), Michelle is certainly no stranger to the acting game, but this role is set to truly propel her theatre career. She will be joined on stage by returning cast members Emily Burton, Patrick Jhanur, Courtney Stewart and Hsiao-Ling Tang all reprising their roles from the original season, as well as Tatum Mottin (Lysa and the Freeborn Dames) coming in fresh.

Single Asian Female hits La Boite Theatre from February 16 – you can grab your tickets here before they disappear.
