Shrill: An Evening with Lindy West brings power back to the people
Women’s rights are a very important issue, now and always – it seems like every time us ladies make a little headway, something happens to undo the hard work. For example, the man currently leading the free world is probably one of the most publicly sexist people in the free world, so it’s an uphill battle to say the least. There is a silver lining – badass feminist warriors who refuse to sit down and shut up are out there spreading the message that women deserve to take up space. Shrill: An Evening with Lindy West is coming to the State Library of Queensland on Wednesday March 1 to help men and women alike laugh and learn from one of the most powerful voices of this generation.
As you may have deduced from the name of the event, Shrill: An Evening with Lindy West is a night run by the woman in question. You may know her name from her work with The Guardian, the New York Times and Jezebel, as well as being a leader within the #ShoutYourAbortion campaign. Her list of credentials is no joke, but her path has been anything but easy – Lindy’s direct opposition to a culture that demands women personify the ‘seen and not heard’ cliché has attracted her a heck of a lot of internet hate. Rather than drown in it, she has used it as fuel for her fire to educate and inspire the masses on a range of issues rooted in pop culture, feminism, social justice, humour and body image.
On the night, Lindy will be expanding on ideas from her empowering memoir Shrill: Notes From a Loud Woman, which was released in May last year. The book is a New York Times bestseller and also won the Stranger’s Genius Award for literature, backing up the fact that people are picking up what Lindy is putting down. Using equal parts humour and pathos, Lindy will dissect the finer points of feminism, fashion and self-awareness, helping the audience to explore these issues in a way where they can laugh and learn in equal measure.
