Scrumptious Reads, James Street

Foodie book store Scrumptious Reads reopens at James Street

Brisbane’s first food book store Scrumptious Reads is set to reopen its design-savvy doors this Friday in the new James Street lane precinct. Originally situated at South Bank, Scrumptious Reads stunned word nerd and foodie visitors with its original coffee cup installation.

For the new store, owners Julie Tjiandra and Reyna Portillo have taken a new design approach, enlisting the help of architect Marina Kozul and designer Fukutoshi Ueno to collaborate on the interior. Creating an apple-core-inspired octagonal design as a base for book display, the pair transformed the case into an extended apple tree to fill the front corner of the shop. Giant shapings of the letters ‘S’ and ‘R’ also provide bookcase shelving, while an apple mural is puzzled together on one wall.

Applying a targeted approach to each featured item, Scrumptious Reads stocks only food and drink related books, ranging from recipe books to novels, history and allergy advice. The tomes are divided into library-meticulous sections, with substantial offerings across meat, bread, cheese, wine, fish and even whole cookbooks on sourdough. Offering specialty books across more niche eating fields, find organic, coeliac and vegan literature among the curvy, wooden Scrumptious Reads shelves.

An assortment of local and European kitchenalia also slips in to the mix, including bamboo tumblers, quirky cutlery and Japanese teacups. And with plans to extend into cafe offerings down the track, soon you’ll be able to read about a cake onsite and eat it too.
