Meet the makers and devour fresh produce during Scenic Rim Eat Local Week
Here at The Weekend Edition, we are all about knowing as much as possible about your food – who makes it, where it comes from and its impact on the environment are just as important as taste. In Brisbane we’re lucky enough to be a short distance from the Scenic Rim, one of our country’s most bountiful resources for fresh produce. Eat Local Week is a yearly showcase of the Scenic Rim’s stunning offering, bringing together the people who’s hard work makes the area shine.
Scenic Rim Eat Local Week really does have something for everyone – from low-cost family days out to high-end degustations, you’ll find it all within the festival’s carefully curated program. A Brisbane-based highlight to look out for is the Wild Canary Producers Lunch, a great entrée to the week that doesn’t require you to head out of town. If you’re keen for a roadtrip, be sure to add these events to your to-do list – Lost World Farmgate Festival opens up some of the region’s most exciting production hubs (like Tommerup’s Dairy Farm and Ladybrook Farm) for a closer look at their processes. Those who just prefer to feast are well catered to, with all manner of fresh dining experiences coming from the likes of Josue Lopez, Alison Alexander and more.
It would be remiss of us to give you a run-down of the Scenic Rim Eat Local Week happenings without mentioning the event’s crowning jewel – the Winter Harvest Festival. This event personifies everything that the week is about – shining a light on the delicious array of food and wine available in the Scenic Rim, as well as giving people a chance to connect with the people behind the produce. More than 65 market stalls will be set up, selling everything from local vegetables through to crayfish, camel milk, carrot ice-cream and more. You can also catch demonstrations from some foodie celebs like MasterChef’s Ben Ungermann, Wild Canary executive chef Glen Barratt and Eat Local co-author Brenda Fawdon. Top it all off with a range of family-friendly fun (carrot clarinet making, anyone?) and you’re got yourself a ripper day out.
