Settle in for a journey of soulful hits with the Songs and Times of Sam Cooke

The world of music owes a heck of a lot to Sam Cooke. Dubbed the Godfather of Soul, his infectious melodies, genre-mixing sound and heavenly vocals combined to propel him to a status that few reach in a lifetime. Not only did he happen to be an amazing artist, but he was also the voice of a revolutionary movement. He broke down religious and racial barriers with his gift, all while smashing out hit after hit. If you mourn the fact that you never got to see him live, we’ve found the next best thing – coming to Brisbane Powerhouse from January 31 to February 2, Songs and Times of Sam Cooke showcases the life of a legend through music.

The Songs & Times Of Sam Cooke showcases the biggest hits of the singer’s career, as performed by revered Australian talent Gary Pinto backed by six-piece band The Champions of Soul. The show has been carefully crafted by acclaimed theatre director Greg Carroll and produced by Melbourne Creative Music Company, bringing together a number of Sam’s hits from his iconic Harlem Square Club from 1963 – think ‘Bring It On Home To Me’, ‘Chain Gang’, ‘Cupid’, ‘Another Saturday Night’, ‘Twistin’ The Night Away’ and more.

Sam Cooke’s shoes may be some big ones to fill, but Gary Pinto is more than worthy to step up to the microphone. The ARIA award-winning artist cites Sam Cooke as one of his biggest influences, and it shows – Gary’s soulful tones and impeccable delivery ensure that the show does Sam’s work justice. Gary first gained acclaim as one third of mega-popular R&B group CDB in the 1990s, and continued to earn professional accolades as a successful songwriter (including penning hits for Guy Sebastian, Anthony Callea, Christine Anu and more). For the past six years he worked behind the scenes on X-Factor as series vocal director and is currently touring in Jimmy Barnes’ band.

If you could use some soul flavour in your life, you can grab tickets to Songs and Times of Sam Cooke through Brisbane Powerhouse – don’t sleep on this one.
