Queensland Ballet brings back a classic with its stunning season of Romeo & Juliet

“Two households, both alike in dignity …” It’s one of the oldest and most tragic love stories of all time, and has been privy to countless interpretations across all artistic mediums – we’re talking, of course, about Shakespeare’s ever-enduring Romeo & Juliet. The beauty, drama and sheer theatricality of The Bard’s most popular tale still resonate with audiences the world over, particularly in the realm of dance. Returning from a sold-out 2014 season and in feverish demand, Queensland Ballet is treating audiences once more to the true treat that is Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo & Juliet, coming to QPAC from August 28.

When a production breaks a 54-year box office record, it’s a no-brainer to bring it back – which is exactly why Romeo & Juliet is making a much-anticipated return for Queensland Ballet’s scorching 2019 program. The company’s Artistic Director Li Cunxin has been constantly asked when the smash-hit would return, and now is the time – and with Queensland Ballet one of the only companies in the world with the rights to perform Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s brilliant version, you’d best believe this is a truly rare treat. This performance will also be particularly special for Queensland Ballet – back in 2014 the production called on international ballet stars to fill roles, while this time around it’s an entirely homegrown cast.

Queensland Ballet’s incendiary troupe of talent will be preparing for Romeo & Juliet under the expert guidance of Lady Deborah MacMillan, the late Sir Kenneth’s wife (and an established artist in her own right across both painting and set design). Joining her is Leanne Benjamin, bringing her 21 years of experience dancing with The Royal Ballet to coach the role of Juliet, as well as Julie Lincoln – another former TBT star with a wealth of knowledge (and technique) to share.

Ready to be charmed? Tickets to Queensland Ballet’s strictly limited season of Romeo & Juliet are on sale now – as the previous season sold out entirely, we would advise you not to sleep on this one.
