Revive returns to celebrate the merging of sustainability and style

Op-shopping sure has come a long way – once purely the domain of quirky arts degree types (and your nan, bless her), the thrill of thrifting has well and truly hit the mainstream. It’s a good thing too, because our world is in an increasingly intense state of peril when it comes to fast fashion – bargains may be tempting but the cost to the earth really isn’t worth the $20 saving you make on a pair of sweatshop jeans. Brisbane City Council is helping to combat this with Revive, its second annual pop-up celebrating sustainable style solutions. Taking over South Bank’s Cultural Forecourt on Friday August 18, the fashion fest is a great place to not only nab some killer finds but to learn awesome tips to take your current wardrobe way, way further.

Celebrating its debut run just last year, Revive is back in fine form to show us all that sustainable fashion is the way of the future. Combining clothing stalls, parades, live entertainment, workshops and food trucks, the festival is a low-key, pressure-free environment to do some shopping and some learning. There will be a curated selection of some of the country’s best second-hand clothing companies including Endeavour, Lifeline and St Vincent de Paul as well as treasure from local vintage businesses. Displays and workshops will teach skills such as distressing denim, repurposing old clothes and even some handy repairing tips so you can make your wardrobe staples go the distance.

A speaker’s tent will be hosting panels and discussions with a number of big names in the sustainable fashion industry – hear from the likes of Jane Milburn from Textile Beat, visual artist Nancy Brown and self-made style revivalist Faye DeLanty just to name a few. As well as her knowledge of sustainable clothing, Faye will be lending another skill set to the festival in the form of four fabulous curated fashion shows that will highlight how easy (and fun) it is to give second-hand clothes a new life. Everyone knows that shopping on an empty stomach leads to poor decisions, so Revive has got the goods sorted when it comes to food – some of Brisbane’s favourite food trucks will be on hand to fuel up budding bargain hunters.

Ready to shop ‘til you drop minus the guilt factor? Put your best foot forward when Revive hits the South Bank Cultural Forecourt on Friday August 18.
