Keep it on wax – jam to live tunes and pick up rare vinyl gems this Record Store Day

When it comes to the at-home musical experience, nothing beats the warmth of a good record (because let’s be honest, nobody really gets nostalgic over CDs). Vinyl has seen a serious resurgence in the past few years, breathing new life into a music market that is so digitally driven. On Saturday April 22, vinyl fans from around the world will celebrate Record Store Day – a time to come together and get amongst the unique culture of a record store and the special role these independently owned entities play in their communities. Brisbane’s favourite stores are getting in on the action – here’s the scoop.

There are some insanely cool and limited releases happening this Record Store Day, from artists who have never pressed vinyl before to re-presses of hard-to-find gems. Prepare to wrestle someone to get your hands on a copy of the official Space Jam soundtrack, or try your luck nabbing a copy of the Blade Runner 35th anniversary picture disc release. Stores around the country will be getting copies of David Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Cure, Ramones, Prince and so many more – as is custom with Record Store Day, these pressings come in very limited numbers and are randomly distributed at stores. Part of the thrill is not knowing what you might find on the day!

As well as picking up some delightful wax for your collection, Record Store Day is also about the in-store experience. Jet Black Cat Music will be going all out for this year’s celebrations, hosting free live shows from Cub Sport and Emma Louise as well as a special appearance by Client Liaison. Tym Guitars has rustled up Kim Salmon (from Scientists) and Peter Black (of The Hard-Ons) to headline its annual RSD gig, as well as FOREVR, Leavings and Brief Habits. Sonic Sherpa is getting in on the love with a two-part celebration – catch Halfway on the Saturday and The Ocean Party on Sunday.

To celebrate all things vinyl, just head to your local record store on Saturday April 22 and goodness will inevitably follow.
