Brisbane Queer Film Festival returns to Brisbane Powerhouse

Brisbane Queer Film Festival returns to Brisbane Powerhouse

The 13th annual Brisbane Queer Film Festival brings you an outstanding selection of the most engaging, inspiring and, of course, entertaining queer films from around the world.

Brisbane’s largest celebration of queer cinema, this is an important outlet for cinema – made by, about and for the queer community – that rarely gains mainstream release. A collection of shorts, features and documentaries from filmmakers across the globe, explore what life is like for members of the queer community in different parts of the world.

This year’s festival line-up is as impressive as ever, with filmmakers from Sweden, Canada, South Africa and USA, as well as local acting and directing talent from Australia and Brisbane’s own film community.

One of the highlights from this week’s selection is from Australian filmmaker Heather Corkhill, whose documentary The Cure is a revealing and intimate look into the relationship between faith and sexuality. It explores the very real, universal problem of the innate dysfunction between gay and religious communities, the ‘ex-gay’ movement and the pressure placed on these individuals to change in order to fit the mould of their faith. Heather handles this sensitive, secretive topic with humility, grace and compassion, providing not just a voice but a cathartic experience for those who were brave enough to tell their stories.

The 13th Brisbane Queer Film Festival screens at the Brisbane Powerhouse  from April 13–22.
