The best ways to celebrate our Sunshine State for Queensland Week
It’s the best time of year to celebrate being a Queenslander! Queensland Week is taking place from June 4–12 and features a tonne of events to take in as part of the festivities, as well as plenty of opportunities to show you bleed maroon.
You might have the forthcoming State of Origin fixture dates etched into your memory, but did you know that Monday June 6 is Queensland’s birthday? If so, congratulations – you are a bona fide Queenslander. If not, don’t stress – Queensland Week is here with plenty of chances to make up for a minor lapse such as forgetting your state’s birthday! Landmarks all across Brisbane will be lighting up maroon every night of Queensland Week, and will be a sight to see. Suncorp Stadium, the Story Bridge, QPAC, Parliament House, Kurilpa Bridge and many more spots with be bathed in the colour of the state, so consider grabbing the family and ticking off a visit or two to as many as you can.
On Saturday June 4 The Courier-Mail Piazza at South Bank will be the site of a free Queensland Week concert courtesy of RACQ, with live performances from some of the state’s best including Sheppard, Adam Brand, Cheap Fakes and The Phoncurves. Brisbane is only a small part of Queensland, but not all of us can afford to check out our own backyard on such short notice. Thankfully, an immersive activation will be taking place on Queen Street Mall with four green screens set up to display backdrops of iconic Queensland landscapes (get your photo taken and say you went travelling). Finally, the Sonic State Queensland Week Micro Festival will be taking place at Metro Arts from June 9–12 with live music, forums, exhibitions and workshops over four days.
Any one can register an event for Queensland Week! Find out how you and your community can get involved by heading to the Queensland Government website. Be sure to check for any events happening in your area.
