Words fly at SLQ for Queensland Poetry Slam
Loud voices are not customarily welcomed in a library, but on Friday August 9 the kindhearted and cool librarians at SLQ welcome such sounds.
The search is now on for Queensland’s best spoken-word poet, who will have to speak, shout and howl to be crowned winner at the second heat of the Queensland Poetry Slam at SLQ’s Queensland Terrace.
At the Queensland Poetry Slam, contestants are given a microphone and two minutes to impress a panel of five judges, who are selected randomly from the audience by an MC at each performance. Genres are flexible but may include spoken word, poetry, hip-hop, monologues and stories. After each contestant’s turn, the judges will hold up score cards with their imparted score, numbered somewhere between one and ten. Of the five scores given, only the middle three are counted. Poetry fans can observe the contestants as they compete from 7:00–9:00 pm.
