Spontaneity rules at Playback Theatre

If you like surprises, and most of us do, Playback Theatre might be just your cup of tea.

When you go to see a show, you generally have a fair idea of what it’s about, right? Well, not if you’re an audience member of What’s Alive in your World? – a theme-free performance that is guided by the audience’s own stories. Housed at the BrisWest Centre on Latrobe Terrace in Paddington, What’s Alive in your World? is an exhilarating style of performance, known as Playback Theatre. Assisted by a conductor, who holds a performance, show-goers share moments from their lives, which are then “played back” by a troupe of artists (usually four actors and one musician). The troupe use dance, movement, mime, music, dialogue, sound and imagination to re-create the story in a creative and entertaining way.

Founded in 1989, Brisbane Playback Theatre Inc has honoured a wide range of stories, from the comedic and light-hearted, to the painful and challenging. Whatever the topic, each performance provides a unique opportunity for audiences to listen, learn and build on each other’s personal and community story.
