Peter Cripps returns to IMA with Endless Space
Melbourne-based artist Peter Cripps has been a key figure in Australian art since the 1970s, when he was an assistant director at the National Gallery of Victoria. From 1984–1986, Peter took the reins at IMA as director, where he curated more than 53 shows.
Returning in artist form to the IMA this weekend, Peter’s latest exhibition is a retrospective, traversing some 40 years of conceptual art practice. Curated by current IMA artistic director Robert Leonard, Endless Space explores Peter’s early works and influences through to current pieces created specifically for the exhibition, showing the development of his practice and style.
Having emerged when conceptualism and minimalism were contesting older ideas of art – when emphasis shifted from the aesthetically pleasing to embedding social and cultural meanings within works – Peter challenged sculptural practices with his works inspired by landscape and architecture. Peter’s works have also been known to explore the connection between works and the spaces in which they are exhibited, analysing gallery and museum practices in the process.
Endless Space opens at IMA on Sunday October 14 with a floor talk by Peter Cripps at 2:00 pm. Exhibiting alongside Endless Space is American artist Carolee Schneemann’s Meat Joy.
