Papergirl Brisbane

Celebrate Bike Week with the Papergirl project

Papergirl returns for its second year in Brisbane this weekend, finding an official spot on the Bike Week schedule. The nine-day festival celebrating all things cycling will commence with Papergirl Brisbane on Saturday March 16, with dedicated cycle fiends randomly distributing art to passersby in the street.

This quirky community project was founded by Aisha Ronniger in Berlin in 2005, after a tightening of the law around postering and graffiti-spraying in public places. Now consisting of 40 projects worldwide, Papergirl kicked off in Brisbane last year, run by local artist-run initiative, Vegas Spray.

The process of Papergirl sees local artists and writers submit works on paper, which will be exhibited at Bird Gallery on Friday March 15 before being neatly rolled up and distributed by bicycle to random people in the city. Papergirl aims to expose more people to the works of local artists and writers via the fun medium of a cycling flash mob. Watch this video from last year’s event or check out the website for more info. Bike Week will run from March 16–24, with the program of free activities viewable here.
