Exhibition shares stories of The Valley People

Through the photographic medium, Alex Buckingham hopes to benefit Fortitude Valley’s community of people who live on the streets. The Valley People is a collection of Alex’s photographs, sharing the untold stories of the less fortunate, which will raise money for the soup kitchens that support this community. Having spent time capturing the stories and emotions of Brisbane’s homeless, Alex has prepared this enlightening collection of images, which will be open to the public on Wednesday July 24, from 5:30–8:30 pm at Design College Australia, Fortitude Valley. Revisit film noir at a Cine-Retro double bill

Settle in to the aptly romantic setting of The Old Museum for an evening of old-world charm at The Cine-Retro Film Society’s double-billed evening of nostalgia and glamour on Saturday July 20. With the aim of fostering an appreciation of characteristic filmmaking from the 1920s to the 1950s, the Cine-Retro Film Society will be projecting Anthony Mann’s Desperate (1947) from 6:45 pm, a film noir classic illustrating the contrasts between the wholesome and the sordid, followed by Alfred Hitchcock’s Suspicion (1941), in which a young women marries a charming man, played by Cary Grant, only to suspect the worst of him and fear for her life. The society’s film evenings include informative introductions by resident film buffs and a supper during the interval, served on china crockery. more

RAW showcases new artists in Elevation

This Friday July 19, Brunswick Street establishment The Arena will encase the creativity of 40 emerging artists from fields spanning fashion, music, visual art, theatre and film for one evening of RAW inspiration entitled Elevation. The evening of art-centric festivities will highlight the works of high achievers from varying genres, including artists who work with non-traditional art forms, such as hairstyling and make-up innovations. Guests can enjoy music by emerging bands, drinks at the bar and a stroll around the impressive works exhibited in the arts space.   more

Seven w/ Another exhibits special anniversary edition

Taking the diverse talents of 14 local creatives and melding their individual disciplines through paired collaborations, Seven w/ Another returns this weekend with a new line-up of work. For this seventh edition, pairings include the likes of photographer Hailey Bartholomew with textile designer Erin Lightfoot and industrial designer Leo Yip with fine artist Emily Devers. This anniversary edition will also include an evening of artist talks with one team from each past exhibition delving behind the creative process of a Seven w/Another brief. The opening night event is being held on Thursday July 11 from 7:00–10:00 pm at Brisbane Powerhouse, with the exhibition continuing through to Wednesday July 17. more

Art and music combine for Spilt Ink at The Rabbit Hole

Melding watercolours and illustrations, Spilt Ink is the first solo exhibition from young Brisbane artist Annabelle Kirkpatrick. With a background in graphic design and photography, Annabelle went on to pursue her artistic flair for capturing the female form, as well as animals. Showing at The Rabbit Hole Ideation Cafe, Spilt Ink will exhibit on Saturday July 13 from 4:00 pm, with live music by local songstress Hailey Calvert. more

Opposites unite in Part Two of La Boite Indie

The second delivery of this year’s La Boite Indie mini festivals opens this Thursday July 11, continuing throughout the month. The creation of Tim Spencer, Show Me Yours, I’ll Show You Mine was inspired by a series of interviews with a male sex worker. The documentary-style production follows two men gently prying into each other’s lives. The second production of La Boite Indie – Part Two offers a completely contrasting work of theatre, with the cast of Joy Fear & Poetry made up of children aged between eight and 12 years. Targeted at adults, the piece sees the children sharing their perspectives of modern-Australian society in a captivating multimedia performance. more

Born to Concrete opens at UQ Art Museum

Borrowing its name from the first Australian concrete poetry publication by the same name, Born to Concrete focuses on the emergence of this experimental form of poetry, from mid-1960s Australia. The exhibition traces the development of concrete poetry in subsequent decades. Although the style takes many forms, concrete poetry may take visual shape through prints, typewritten text, sculpture and found objects. Featuring more than 20 artists, Born to Concrete will run from July 5 until October 6 at the UQ Art Museum. more

War Horse strides into QPAC

From the National Theatre of Great Britain, War Horse comes to QPAC, revealing life-size puppets and a heartwarming story. War Horse tells the tale of Albert and his beloved horse Joey, who is sold to the cavalry during World War I and shipped to France. Fate takes the horse on an interesting voyage, serving on both sides of the war. Albert, who cannot forget his friend but is not yet old enough to enlist in the war, embarks on a mission to bring Joey home. War Horse will run from Saturday July 6, highlighting the work of South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company. more

Late Change captures fading skies at Jan Manton Art

Jan Manton Art is this month featuring Brisbane-based artist Keith Burt for the first time, in an exhibition entitled Late Change. The exhibition will include large and small-scale paintings that predominantly depict the streets and skies of Brisbane, particularly pertaining to the West End region of the city.
