Whisky and music combine at The Old Museum

August has crept up on us, which means spring is on its way. Celebrate the last month of winter with two of the season’s best spirit-lifting aids – whisky and warming tunes. On Saturday August 3, The Old Museum will host Winter Mornings and Whiskey Nights: An intimate evening with Sue Ray. Supported by Brisbane-based musicians Phil Smith and thewhiskeyarchive, Sue Ray will share her acclaimed and soothing voice with an intimate audience in the picturesque historic setting. The night’s music will feature alt-country and nu-folk sounds served up alongside the suitably matched beverage, whisky. more

GOMA takes visitors on a historical tour

Take an expertly curated My History tour at the GOMA on Friday August 8. In association with My Country, I Still Call Australia Home: Contemporary Art from Black Australia, the gallery welcomes sightseers on a historical examination of indigenous history. My History will take visitors on a tour observing the representation of indigenous histories, which have become a common matter presented in contemporary artworks in recent decades. Held on the day that celebrates International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, the tour will look at the way Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people have inserted their histories into the commonly accepted versions of Australian history. Group of Five exhibition opens at Lethbridge

Following the Lethbridge 10 000 Award presented earlier this year, Lethbridge Gallery is introducing the Group of Five series to its program. Demonstrating the painting skills of five emerging Australian artists, who have been picked from the annual competition, the Paddington-based gallery will display its collated works from August 3–14. Commencing part one with opening drinks at the gallery on Saturday August 3 from 5:00–7:00 pm, Group of Five exhibition will celebrate the paintings of 2013 major prize winner David Kas, highly commended artist Lars Vester, emerging artist Bronwyn Hill, and talented painters Scott McDougall and Tara Spicer.   more

Congo Flavour comes to Greenslopes Bowls Club

In a night filled with Afro beats, barefoot bowls and Congolese culture, Congo Flavour will take over the Greenslopes Bowls Club on Friday July 26. Celebrating Congolese music and tradition, Congo Flavour is a benefit night featuring dance classes, DJs, organic African-inspired foods and a Congo dress-up corner. The Grotto Room of Greenslopes Bowls Club will be transformed in support of AusCongo Network, a non-profit organisation working to relieve poverty in the Congo and within Australia’s Congolese community. Emerging art on show in ‘the churchie’ at QCA

The official opening and announcement of the churchie national emerging art prize will be hosted at the Queensland College of Art on Friday July 26. From 6:00–8:00 pm, guests can enjoy refreshments at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, as the exhibiting finalists nervously await the announcement of the coveted emerging art prize. Artworks from more than 30 contenders will be displayed in the South Brisbane gallery until Saturday September 7, showcasing the talents of these Australian artists. There will also be artist discussions and professional development courses for visual-art teachers over the coming months. Exhibition shares stories of The Valley People

Through the photographic medium, Alex Buckingham hopes to benefit Fortitude Valley’s community of people who live on the streets. The Valley People is a collection of Alex’s photographs, sharing the untold stories of the less fortunate, which will raise money for the soup kitchens that support this community. Having spent time capturing the stories and emotions of Brisbane’s homeless, Alex has prepared this enlightening collection of images, which will be open to the public on Wednesday July 24, from 5:30–8:30 pm at Design College Australia, Fortitude Valley.
