The Reggae Beats Weekend List

In the spring of 1979, French musician Serge Gainsbourg released his 13th album Aux Armes et cætera, which was recorded in Kingston, Jamaica. Gathering together some of the island’s best reggae musicians including Rita Marley, Serge infused his usual French pop with the local sound. Kick back to Aux Armes et cætera spinning on the record player, or witness some reggae beats of a more energetic tempo down at South Bank this weekend. more

Spend springtime exploring Mount Tamborine

From September 27–29, Mount Tamborine welcomes visitors to its Springtime on the Mountain Open Gardens Festival event, which will begin with the Mountain Open Gardens Trail 2013. Along the trail, visitors can visit six beautiful private gardens that will open to the public for a limited time. From Friday September 27, gardening enthusiasts seeking inspiration can stroll through professionally landscaped acreage gardens as well as flower-filled cottage grounds from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Tickets are available at the Botanic Gardens in Eagle Heights. more

Fresh Meat served up at Southside Tea Room

Sunday September 29 brings Fresh Meat: Stand-Up Comedy & Live Improv to Southside Tea Room. Hosted by Jacob Lingard, the evening of hilarity commences at 6:30 pm at the Morningside haunt. This month’s installation will feature the comic stylings of Mitch McCutcheon, Alf Arber, Dan Rath, Nick Grimwood, Joe Shaffer and musical funnyman, Ben Knight. The tea room’s ‘mince’ challenges will test the comedians’ skills, as funny bones are flexed and improvisational quests are issued. Tickets are $5 at the door, and attendees can buy foodstuffs and beverages at the bar. more

He Died with a Felafel in his Hand hits the stage

He Died With a Felafel in his Hand, the 1994 lad lit book that scored itself a cult following, is coming to the stage during October, when John Birmingham’s debut novel will appear at Brisbane Powerhouse. Encounter freaks, geeks, gamers, stoners, losers and junkies as John shifts his milk crates from one grungy sharehouse to another. The production, which will run from October 1–5, will tell the perilous tales of sharing spaces, facing run-ins with the law, dealing with grotty flatmates and confronting life’s challenges. more

Get strumming at the SPRUKE Ukulele Festival

Relaxation is sure to ensue as the harmonious melodies of the SPRUKE Ukulele Festival reach your ears from September 20–22. Brisbane’s Ukulele Music Society, know to most as the BUMS, will be sharing their love of all things ukulele at the Southbank Institute of Technology over three musical days. The calm-inducing program is made up of workshops, demonstrations, open-mic performances for those so inclined, and two evening concerts. Whether you’re a budding uke player, or a ukulele prodigy, all are welcome to join in on the festivities in South Bank’s cultural precinct. more

Fragments: Another Country

QUT’s Art Museum presents Fragments exhibition

The works of Brisbane-based husband-and-wife team Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan will be exhibited as part of Fragments: Another Country from Saturday September 28 to Sunday November 24. QUT Art Museum will host the exhibition, which showcases the Philippine-born couple’s elaborate and intricately planned installations –  focusing on migration, family, belonging and dislocation. Each subsequent artwork in the exhibition builds on the previous and provides an unprecedented opportunity for audiences to view a comprehensive series of pieces from the acclaimed duo. The exhibition will be officially opened on Friday September 27 at 6:00 pm.
