Put pedal to the metal and ride south of the river

BMX bandits, retro beach cruisers, middle-aged men in lycra (MAMILs) and fixie pixies can all share the two wheels they have in common at the first Pedal exhibition in West End. The idea for Pedal was born when two friends met up during a warm Copenhagen summer and became decidedly determined to see more riding of bicycles in Brisbane. Upon their return home, Mara and Ciara decided to combine their love of cycling, photography, art and design in an exhibition. Launching on the evening of Friday November 15, Pedal will kick off with a leisurely group ride from the city to the Mollison Street venue, where crowds will soak up cycle-inspired photography and film, and tuck in to food from Street Food Australia and Hellhound Hotdogs, as well as organic beer and wine. more

Six power pairs paint Museum of Brisbane silver

Six pairs of Queensland’s most renowned visual artists will unite their powers for Museum of Brisbane’s newest exhibition, Silver. Each coupling sees a leading photographer collaborate with an artisan jeweller, together exploring the consistencies and differences in their art forms. From this exploration, the duos will present new artworks inspired by Brisbane. Employing the use of silver throughout the creative process, the artists will look at the historical significance of silver in art and reflect on the stories that link Brisbane’s past and present. The pairings will see Michael Cook and Ari Athans, Ray Cook and Matt Dwyer, Marian Drew and Barbara Heath, Andrea Higgins and Madeleine Brown, Deb Mansfield and Sheridan Kennedy, and Carl Warner and Nadine Cameron come together. The exhibition will begin on Friday November 15 and run until April 27. more

The Keep It Local Weekend List

This week we attended a design-thinking talk at the State Library of Queensland where the panel and the audience put forward questions and discussed the idea of how might we design a more ethical and sustainable economic system. While the topic is a large one to conquer and can by no means be solved in one creative session, there are things we can all do in our personal lives to contribute to a positive and localised economy. Here’s a little list to inspire new habits in your weekend routine. more
