Zine & Indie Comic Symposium returns to The Edge

Whether you’re a scrawler or a drawer, unite with other likeminded papier enthusiasts at the Zine & Indie Comic Symposium (ZICS) this weekend. A three-day celebration of the zine and comic mediums, ZICS will run from Friday August 29 to Sunday August 31 at The Edge at SLQ. The team from local weekly webcomic LUV Comics will be hosting a Pecha Kucha-style presentation on opening night and presenting on a panel about gender and sexuality, while DIY screenprinting workshops and a large-scale painting battle will also entertain. more

From Brisbane to France and back again, local artist Erin Kennedy has captured her journey from her leafy homeland to Montmartre, Paris in a series of colourful new paintings. Her solo exhibition BNE-PAR-BNE captures Paris’ charm through Expressionistic landscapes and quirky street walks. Head along to Jugglers ArtSpace this Saturday August 30 from 6:00 pm for an opening night drink, where you can sway to the live music and imagine yourself transported to the artistic streets of Montmartre. more

Jayne Hodgson exhibition opens at Brisbane Modern Art Gallery

Food, wine, art and music will come together for the opening of an exhibition of internationally recognised painter Jayne Hodgson’s work at Brisbane Modern Art Gallery this weekend. The local Brisbane artist will present this new major solo exhibition to raise funds for MS Queensland to support people living with multiple sclerosis. RISE hip-hop book launches at New Globe Theatre

Urban culture photographer Michelle Grace Hunder began shaping the concept of an Australian hip-hop photo book two years ago, and this weekend the final product will be launched in Brisbane. Taking to New Globe Theatre this Saturday August 23, the launch for RISE will see a number of the featured artists performing on the night. Remi will perform alongside hip-hop greats Briggs, Mantra, Grey Ghost, Dylan Joel, Mistress of Ceremony and DJs Jaytee, Flagrant and Sensible J. The launch will also see a different bonus act at each city’s event, with surprise guest artists, who have been featured in the RISE book, taking to the stage to freestyle a performance of their choice. more

Short+Sweet Festival bursts into Brisbane Powerhouse

The best in short theatre works from Brisbane and the Gold Coast will take to the Brisbane Powerhouse stage from Thursday August 21 until Sunday August 30. Presented by Short+Sweet Queensland, the Short+Sweet Festival will feature more than 40 local works of theatre and late-night cabaret in ten-minute bursts. From grisly drama to outlandish comedy to sultry song, the festival will show up to ten plays or six cabaret acts per night, with the audience then voting to send favourites acts through to the gala final on Sunday September 28. more

Future Shorts Film Festival drops in to Brisbane

From cinemas and concert halls to caves, cafes, libraries and warehouses, the Future Shorts Festival has been popping up in both traditional and obscure locations across 90 countries worldwide. This weekend, the Future Shorts Film Festival will travel to Brisbane for its Australia stint, bringing a program of award-winning short films from leading film festivals around the globe. Filmic endeavours from more than 20 countries are represented amongst the line-up, followed by the sounds of three local electronica musicians. TEDxBrisbane 2014 registrations now open

TEDxBrisbane has announced that registrations are now open to attend TEDxBrisbane 2014, and so begins the countdown to this inspiring event. In precisely 52 days from today, the wonderful Brisbane Powerhouse will once again be teeming with hundreds of people from the TEDxBrisbane community. This year marks Noel Staunton’s last year as artistic director of Brisbane Festival. After four years at the helm, Noel has created a wonderful beast of a festival that draws record numbers and inspires both young and old. Part of his vision for Brisbane has been to inspire a late-night culture for the city, changing the current habit of wrapping up dinner by 8:00 pm and retreating to bed. more
